album reviewed: dido plays it safe...again..

hey. hazim here...again. I am a self confessed Dido fan who loved and loved and loved her last album Life For Rent and No Angel and I must admit for five years, the wait for her third major release ( her first album Odds and Ends) doesn't count. It was a mixtape thingy) has been long and grueling
WHAT'S GOOD: What separated Dido from her soft-voiced counterparts (namely Sarah McLachlan, Jem, KT Tunstall) was the backdrop her voice always snuggled up against her older brother's electronic production. Here, that electronic is almost absent. Rollo's had to make way for ambient producer Brian Eno with a multitude of guests ranging from a Fleetwood Mac member to Citizen Cope ("Burnin Love is the song and he apears towards the last half of it with his signature sit-on-the-couch-and-sing delivery). The ambiance does her flat voice good, especially when she's sprouting personal lines that could have been taken right out of her diary. The very personal "Grafton Street" and "The Day Before The Day" deal with the death of her father. "Don't Believe In Love" deals with her fear f intimacy And so on. The Bridget Jones Diary themes passing by like familiar dreams. This is her most personal work and it's more gratifying for it.
WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD: This album, despite the stunning production value courtesy of Brian Eno can only go so far. As personal as the lyrics are, you kind of wish she'd let some of that gut wrenching emotion into her whispery soft voice. Just imagine how incredible it'd sund. True, her voice is limited as heard on several songs where she tries to pull off a falsetto. But the deadpan Sheryl Crow delivery is a bit disappointing. Especially when there's no electronica or bleeps and buzzes to hide the flaw. This album has no killer sngle and Dido doesn't seem to mind (although her label is trying everything in their power to make it a success a la Life For Rent with their promotional stints with the I Phone and Nectar and 11 short films being filmed and lah blah blah, this album still comes in second on the charts behind a rerelease of Leona Lewis's debut on the charts). If this hits a million, I'll buy another physical copy of Safe Trip Home.
SOOOO0....: Dido does the same thing that she's known for. She's the queen of easy listening. Like Sade was back in her prime. But even Sade took a few creative leaps here and there. This isn't a bad album. The emotional and production layers peel away with repeated listens but on the surface, it's just another Dido affair. And naming it SAFE Trip Home doesn't help either. Neither does putting a tiny laughable astronaut on the cover. But I'm a Dido fan through and through and hopefully, this presents a new possible direction for her in the future.

hey. hazim here...again. "Don't Believe In Love" was a bit different for Dido as the lead single off her third album, her first in five years. But it was boring all the same. It was her failing trying to be sexy. The other leaked song "Look No Further" was a bit better, but not by much because it saw her relying too much on Brian Eno's orchestral trickery. Here, a new leaked song, almost six minutes long, called "Grafton Street" hits every spot right. In terms of pop, this is great stuff. It's dreamy and sad. Dido's always struggled with trying to toe the lines between cheesy and emotive, lyrically. But this song is about her father's death earlier this year. So when she sings about all the 'no mores' she sounds tired and convincing. The production is stellar too. The woodwinds kinda make it feel like a Corrs track though...If there were to be a Lord of The Rings 4, Peter Jackson would probably snatch this up. It's atmospheric, subtle, simple, like the kind of song Sarah McLachlan's been trying to nail for the past...oh, 5 years. Finally, something promising for Dido. Maybe the new album Safe Trip Home,will be good after all, despite its cheesy cover (the little astronaut? come on....ick). Hazim. Out.

hey. hazim here...again. So...uh, Dido's got this new song available as a free mp3 download on her official website (Click HERE freebee lovers). And uh...what does it sound like? It's a sparse simple ballad about 'poets walking on moons'. The lyrics get a bit cringe-worthy. Her voice is still beautiful, as always, it remains something you can count on, like an old dog. But it's been a long time since her last album and the music scene has changed drastically. If this is the type of music Dido wants to put out, then good for her. But bad for her career. "Look No Further" was produced by Jon Brion and you can catch glimmers of an orchestra, his signature, but this isn't worth the long 5 year wait. Dido's upcoming album will be titled Safe Trip Home, and apparently, this is just a song to garner excitement for the album. Not the official single. But this will still be on the album. Boo. I was expecting something more though. This could have been a hidden track off Life For Rent or No Angel. All I know is, even Jem would snort at this. Her next song had better be better. Or am I just an unhappy fanboy? Yeah, that's it. Still, at least she didn't take as long as Axl Rose. Hazim. Out.

dido's got a new album coming out! can you say "finally"?

hey. hazim here...again. Does anybody remember back in 2001, when Eminem and Dr. dre sampled Dido's "Thank You" for their own smash hit "Stan"? And then "Thank You" did better than "Stan" climbing to number 3 on the US and the UK charts?And then her debut album No Angel sold a whopping 13 million albums. And then her second album sold 8 million? And she had another big hit "White Flag"? And how she's been gone so long that her niche in the music world might have been taken over by the likes of Rachael Yamagata, KT Tunstall, and Jem?



Well, none of that soon. Cus they're all going to have to make way for the original (after Portishead, Kate Bush, and Sarah Mclachlan of course). She's coming out with a new album in November, with first single "Don't Believe In Love" being released to radios in September, the 16th to be exact. Let's hope the record label keeps to their word. The album's been delayed so many times. The long gestation time is probably due to the death of her father earlier this year.



She's been working with producer Brian Eno, who's famous for his work with Kanye West and Fiona Appl.e Although I liked her second album Life For Rent, it was a little too similiar to No Angel, just a little more polished. I'm hoping that she changes up her sound a bit though.

The Return Of Faithless...Fuck Yeah! And Guess What? MTV's Banned The First Single's Video!

Hey.HazimHere...again. One of my favorite bands EVER,Faithless performed at the World Music Awards recently,I think. I didnt manage to catch them so I'm not at all sure. I tried searching for it on YouTube and ended up with nothing. But anyways...triphop and dance always collide beautifully whenever they record an album and I'm sure their new one ToAllNewArrivals is gonna be like that too.Hypnotic.That's the word. Wat other band could have produced a single as perfect as 'Insomia'? After a bit of a hiatus, Maxi Jazz,Sister Bliss, and Dido's amazing cool older brother,Rollo, are hitting back with a new CDfeaturing guest spots for Cat Power,Dido (of course), RobertSmith(yay!), Cass Fox (oooooh), and Harry Collier.

Oh damn,I'm drooling. I always wanted to have a CD with RobertSmith,Dido,Faithless, and Cat Power all in one. I actually get goosebumps listening to the first single 'Bombs' which was,un called for for, banned. Here's whatWikipedia has down:

Bombs is the first single from Faithless' fifth studio album To All New Arrivals. It features Harry Collier from Kubb. The single was released as a download on 2006-10-23 and will be released on CD and 12" on 2006-11-20, one week before the release of the album..

The video, which has already been banned by MTV, shows scenes of everyday life composited with stock footage of war. The result is a stylish, if jarring, juxtaposition of the seemingly innocent with familiar scenes of modern warfare that hints at the degree to which such images now form part of our contemporary consciousness. Director Greenhalgh told shots.net: "I didn't see the video as particularly political, pro war, or anti war. It's actually a representation of where we are all at right now. War infects all our lives; recently it feels that this has increasingly become 'our way of life'. It is rare to be given the opportunity to shoot a video that is deemed controversial. All I tried to do was make people think about the everyday life we live in our comfortable existences, and the contrast to that through war."
